چکیده

XTE J1739–302 is a transient X-ray source with unusually short outbursts, lasting on the order of hours. Here we give a summary of X-ray observations we have made of this object in outburst with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and at a low level of activity with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, as well as observations made by other groups. Visible and infrared spectroscopy of the mass donor of XTE J1739–302 are presented in a companion paper. The Xray spectrum is hard both at low levels and in outburst, but somewhat variable, and there is strong variability in the absorption column from one outburst to another. Although no pulsation has been observed, the outburst data from multiple observatories show a characteristic timescale for variability on the order of 1500–2000 s. The Chandra localization (right ascension 173911.58, declination −30 20 37.6, J2000) shows that despite being located less than 2 from the Galactic Center and highly absorbed, XTE J1739–302 is actually a foreground object with a bright optical counterpart. The combination of a very short outburst timescale and a supergiant companion is shared with several other recently-discovered systems, forming a class we designate as Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs). Three persistently bright X-ray binaries with similar supergiant companions have also produced extremely short, bright outbursts: Cyg X–1, Vela X–1, and 1E 1145.1–6141. Subject headings: X-rays:individual(XTE J1739-302) — X-rays:binaries — supergiants — stars:neutron

Monitoring Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients with Swift. Iii. Outbursts of the Prototypical Sfxts Igr J17544−2619 and Xte

IGR J17544−2619 and XTE J1739−302 are considered the prototypical sources of the new class of High Mass X–ray Binaries, the Supergiant Fast X–ray Transients (SFXTs). These sources were observed during bright outbursts on 2008 March 31 and 2008 April 8, respectively, thanks to an on-going monitoring campaign we are performing with Swift, started in October 2007. Simultaneous observations with XR...

J 17544 − 2619 : A new supergiant fast X - ray transient revealed by optical / infrared observations ⋆

One of the most recent discoveries of the INTEGRAL observatory is the existence of a previously unknown population of X-ray sources in the inner arms of the Galaxy. IGR J17544−2619, IGR J16465−4507 and XTE J1739−302 are among these sources. Although the nature of these systems is still unexplained, the investigations of the optical/NIR counterparts of the two last sources, combined with high en...

INTEGRAL monitoring of the Galactic Plane in the last 5 years revealed a new subclass of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs), the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs). They display flares lasting from minutes to hours, with peak luminosity of 1036 −1037 erg s−1 and a frequent long term flaring activity reaching an X-ray luminosity of 1033 − 1034 erg s−1, as recently detected by the Swift satel...

Monitoring Supergiant Fast X–ray Transients with Swift. Results from the first year

The advent of Swift has allowed, for the first time, the possibility to give Supergiant Fast X–ray Transients (SFXTs), the new class of High Mass X–ray Binaries discovered by INTEGRAL, non serendipitous attention throughout most phases of their life. In this paper we present our results based on the first year of intense Swift monitoring of four SFXTs, IGR J16479−4514, XTE J1739−302, IGR J17544...

The first broad-band X–ray study of the Supergiant Fast X–ray Transient SAX J1818.6−1703 in outburst

The Supergiant Fast X–ray Transient (SFXT) SAX J1818.6−1703 underwent an outburst on 2009 May 6 and was observed with Swift. We report on these observations which, for the first time, allow us to study the broad-band spectrum from soft to hard X–rays of this source. No X–ray spectral information was available on this source before the Swift monitoring. The spectrum can be deconvolved well with ...
